Decommissioning the MCUs

On July 10, 2018, the K-20 Education Network Consortium voted to decommission the two Cisco MSE8000 MCUs and related support, effective July 1, 2019.

The old MCU devices were nearing the end of their usable lifespan. Cisco stopped selling the systems in 2017 and ended manufacturer software updates and Cisco routine failure analysis on May 2, 2018. A viable and cost-effective alternative cloud-based video communications service, Zoom, was purchased in 2016 and was implemented in parallel to the MCU service up until July 2019. Adoption and use of Zoom has dramatically increased with very positive reviews from users.
